Montreal, April 25, 2023. In the wake of the unveiling of the Liminal Drift movie, director and composer Jonathan Goulet presents his first film music composition. Carried by lush synthesizer arrangements, the Liminal Drift soundtrack is inspired by the movements of the characters to take the listener into a gentle trance of contemplation and surreal daydreams.

A soundscape inspired by the movement of the body

This film composition by Jonathan Goulet is divided into seven tracks, inspired by the atmospheres and textures of the Liminal Drift movie: Foam & Smoke, Journeys, Rocks, Air, Bubbles, Marbles and Liminal Drift. This electronic amalgam, between the natural and the synthetic, takes the listener on a hypnotic journey, on the fine line between the imaginary and the real. 

"I like to think of my compositional process as similar to that of a sculptor. Explains Jonathan Goulet, composer.  First, there are layers and layers of material. Textures, rhythms, pulses, melodies, patterns, mixed together without structure. I find these layers by playing with instruments, whether digital or acoustic. I keep sculpting until my block feels like a journey, a story, makes me feel like I can follow it and it holds and stimulates my imagination from start to finish."

The Liminal Drift movie

Set in a variety of visually stimulating environments, Liminal Drift follows a series of abstract characters as they move through natural or artificial landscapes. In these playfully ambiguous moments, the viewer is invited to witness the embodiment of fleeting conscious states that teeter on the edge between attention to the outside world and the inner imaginary fantasies that are induced.

About Jonathan Goulet

Jonathan Goulet is a composer and filmmaker. His instrumental works have been premiered by several Quebec soloists and ensembles including Magnitude 6, Pallade Musica, Vincent Lauzer, Aka and the Orchestre de la Francophonie. The multidisciplinary artist regularly collaborates as a composer, sound designer or performer with several choreographers including Alexandre Morin, Jason Martin Sara Hanley and Rachelle Bourget. He is co-founder of the interdisciplinary art duo Other Animals, a group dedicated to creation in all forms and mediums.

About Other Animals

Founded in 2020 by Jonathan Goulet and Alexandre Morin, Other Animals is an artistic duo that produces interdisciplinary performances and short films. Together they create hybrid projects, using contemporary dance, experimental music and visual arts to create alternative realities on stage and for the camera. The artists present Breach (2017, 2019), Passing Cloud (2018) and On the Brink (2020) at Tiohtià:ke/Montreal (Tangente, ZH Festival, Parcours Danse).
